Bahrain Parliamentary Division discusses support for urgent motion on maritime security with Latin America and Caribbean Parliamentary Group

Arusha, Oct. 4 (BNA): Jamal Mohammed Fakhro, First Deputy Chairman of the Shura Council and Head of the Bahrain Parliamentary Division delegation, met with Roger Edward, President of the Parliamentary Group of Latin America and the Caribbean, on the sidelines of the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), being held in Arusha, Tanzania, from October 5 to 9.

The meeting discussed ways to strengthen cooperation between the Bahrain Parliamentary Division and the Parliamentary Group of Latin America and the Caribbean, and enhance coordination at international parliamentary forums in support of shared interests and unified positions on issues of mutual concern.

The two sides also reviewed Bahrain’s proposed draft urgent item for submission to the IPU Assembly, entitled "Ensuring Freedom of Navigation, Maritime Security and the Flow of International Trade through Maritime Routes and Straits in Accordance with International Law", highlighting its strategic importance to global security and the economy.

Fakhro said Bahrain’s proposal reflects its firm commitment to ensuring freedom and safety of navigation through international maritime routes and straits, given their direct impact on global trade stability and energy security. He noted that Bahrain’s strategic location underscores the importance of concerted international parliamentary efforts to establish legal and cooperative frameworks to protect these vital waterways from threats and risks.

For his part, Edward commended Bahrain’s active role in international parliamentary forums and its constructive initiatives in support of international peace and security. He affirmed the group’s support for the Bahrain Parliamentary Division’s proposal on maritime navigation and straits security, stressing the importance of including it as an urgent item on the Assembly’s agenda.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Head of the Bahrain Parliamentary Division delegation Hala Ramzi Fayez, and MPs Hassan Ibrahim Hassan, Zainab Abdulameer Khalil and Ali Saqr Al Doseri.

The Parliamentary Group of Latin America and the Caribbean is one of the six geopolitical groups within the IPU. It comprises parliaments from more than 30 countries across South America, Central America and the Caribbean, and works to promote cooperation and coordination among its members on issues of mutual concern within the Union.
