US pledge to help Georgia in democratisation & energy security.
TBILISI, July 23 (Itar-Tass) - The U.S. Vice-President Joseph Biden who has arrived in the Georgian capital for a working visit said on Wednesday that the United States considered Georgia to be an important partner. He also pledged to help Georgia in its democratic development.
In his speech at a reception given in the Georgian president's palace,
Biden said that many people around the globe were watching how Georgia was
building a democratic state and how democracy would develop in Georgia
because the latter was a very important country for the entire region and
its future.
Biden promised to help Georgia in the provision of its energy
security. He said that Washington welcomed Georgia's vital role in this
process and added that it was a bridge for the transportation of natural
resources from the Caspian region to the West.
The U.S. vice-president confirmed the U.S. intention to develop
partnership with Georgia based on a solid basis.
In turn, Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili thanked the United
States for its support for the people of Georgia and the country's
territorial integrity. He said that with Western help Georgia would
achieve re-unification and revival by peaceful means.
Saakashvili thanked U.S. President Barack Obama for voicing his firm
and clear support of Georgia's territorial integrity during his recent
visit to Moscow.
The Georgian president awarded Joseph Biden with the Order of St.
George - the highest civilian award in Georgia.
In the meantime, the Georgian opposition adopted an appeal to the U.S.
vice-president at a rally in Tbilisi late on Wednesday. The opposition
members said that they hoped that the new U.S. administration would assist
in the restoration of democratic principles in the country - the
observation of human rights, the freedom of press, independent courts and
the holding of early elections.
Opposition leaders Nino Burdzhanadze, Salome Zurabishvili and other
politicians said in their speeches that the action was designed to
demonstrate adherence to Western democratic values.
On Thursday, the U.S. vice-president plans to meet the leaders of
Georgian non-parliamentary opposition organizations.

MOSCOW, July 23 (Itar-Tass) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will
on Thursday meet activists and young deputies of the United Russia party,
the Kremlin press service told Itar-Tass.
Some of the party's top leaders are also expected to be present at the
meeting with Medvedev, the Itar-Tass news agency reports. They include
Boris Gryzlov, the Russian State Duma speaker and the head of the High
Council of the United Russia party, the co-chairmen of the party's High
Council, Mintimer Shaimiyev and Yuri Luzhkov, Vyacheslav Volodin, the
secretary of the presidium of the United Russia's General Council, and
Andrei Vorobyov, the head of the Central Executive Committee.
Young deputies of the United Russia party from municipal and regional
legislative assemblies and members of youth chambers have been invited to
talk to President Medvedev.
Andrei Vorobyov, the head of the United Russia's Central Executive
Committee, confirmed that youth policy would be the key item on the agenda.
At a meeting with the United Russia party leaders early in April,
Medvedev called for a broader use of the potential of youth support
programs. He then said: "We need to return to this subject and think of
how we can use the potential we have better."
Youth policy was central to a meeting of the State Council on July 17.
In his speech Medvedev suggested establishing a universal age limit of 18
years old for candidates to municipal governing bodies in Russian regions.
He believes that the measure would help to more actively involve young
people in the country's political and public life.
President Medvedev said that at present the minimal age of candidates
in Russian regions varied from 18 to 21.

GELENDZHIK, the Krasnodar territory, July 23 (Itar-Tass) -
Inter-regional crime will dominate a joint board meeting of the Interior
Ministries of Russia and Armenia on Thursday.
A search for criminals who escape from crime scenes and their eventual
detention will be one of the major subjects for discussion, a member of
the Russian delegation told Itar-Tass.
He said that the board meeting would consider the implementation of
the annual large-scale preventive operation called 'Search' as well as
ways of interaction between the two ministries in fighting illegal trade
in drugs and precursors.
"The situation with the drug business both in the territories of
Russia and Armenia continues having a negative impact on the general crime
situation in the two countries," the Russian Interior Ministry
representative said.
Other topics for discussion include economic and tax crimes, illegal
financial transactions and other economic offences.
