Timoshenko hopes for punishing of Gongadze's murder masterminds

.

KIEV, July 27 (Itar-Tass) -- Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Timoshenko
hopes for punishing the masterminds of the murder of opposition journalist
Georgy Gongadze, who was killed in 2000. She has made a statement in a
televised interview commenting on the detention of one of the main
suspects - General of Police Alexei Pukach.
"For me it is very painful that the murder case had been politicised
for nine years, but the prosecutor's office did not complete the
investigation," the prime minister said.
She believes that this time not minor criminals will be brought to
justice, but real masterminds of Gongadze's murder will be brought to
responsibility. "There should be no mocking at the country any longer,"
Timoshenko said.
Alexei Pukach has escaped justice since 2003. He was detained on July
21, 2009, in the village of Molochki, the Chudnovsky district in the
Zhitomir region. According to the investigators, Pukach organized the
manhunt after Gongadze, led a group of officers, who abducted him and
strangled the journalist himself.
After Pukach's detention deputy chief of the Ukrainian Security
Service Vasily Gritsak noted that the suspect in Gongadze's murder
testified that several high-ranking officials are involved in the crime.
Pukach's lawyer Sergei Osyka stated that his client did not name the
murder masterminds and did not point to the place, where Gongadze's head
is hidden and is not found yet.

.Kursk commemorates submariners of Kursk nuclear submarine.

KURSK, July 27 (Itar-Tass) -- Hundreds of residents of Kursk, which is
the city of the military glory, came to commemorate the submariners from
the nuclear submarine Kursk at the Memorial to the victims in the Great
Patriotic War on Sunday. Twelve submariners from the Kursk nuclear
missile-carrying submarine, which sank in the Barents Sea on August 12,
2000, are laid to rest at the memorial. Wreaths and fresh flowers were
laid down to their tombs and to the Monument crowned by the white statue
of a mourning angel.
"The white marble angel is a symbol of "the living soul" which mourns
day and night about the Kursk crewmen. Today there are no "living souls"
here, just tombs not only at the monument, at the basement of which the
Eternal Fire is burning, but also at the whole memorial, where more than
3,000 our glorious warriors are buried. The angel is also a symbol of
eternal memory and fair sorrow of all living people," one of the monument'
s authors, sculptor Nikolai Krivolapov told Itar-Tass on Sunday.
Taking part in the commemoration ceremony were regional and city
officials, relatives of the fallen heroes, naval veterans and naval cadets.
Wreaths and fresh flowers were also laid to the Monument to the Kursk
Submariners on the Alley of Glory in the north-western district of the
city. Some 118 birches are planted on the alley to symbolize the number of
crewmen in the sunken nuclear submarine. The monument was made of the hull
of the foresaid submarine raised from the bottom of the Barents Sea. The
Alley of Glory is planted not far from a residential house, where 16
families of deceased submariners live, as many of them moved from
Vidyayevo (where the Kursk submarine was based) to Kursk for permanent
residence after the tragedy.
A remembrance service was held at the Archangel Michael Maritime
Church of Kursk in commemoration of Kursk naval sailors, who were killed
during the Great Patriotic War and the post-war time in the Black Sea,
Northern, Pacific and Baltic Fleets.
