Police detain all protesters in Kyrgyzstan.
BISHKEK, July 29 (Itar-Tass) - The oppositionists, who were
dissatisfied with the results of the July 23 presidential elections, could
not hold mass actions of protest, which were scheduled in Kyrgyzstan on
Wednesday. The police detained about 120 protesters.
About 50 oppositionists were detained in Bishkek for an unauthorized
rally and about 70 protesters were detained in the village of Besh-Kungei
(20 kilometers south of the capital) during their march to the city.
According to the prosecutor's office, all of them will be brought to
administrative responsibility and fined, after that the oppositionists
will be released.
On Tuesday, the headquarters of the opposition Unified People's
Movement stated that the initiative to hold mass and indefinite opposition
rallies was originated in regions. On Wednesday, the movement's
headquarters announced that actions of protest are being held in the
Issyk-Kul, Naryn, Chui and Talas regions. Meanwhile, the Interior Ministry
did not confirm this information, assuming that the situation in the
republic remains stable and fully under control of the law enforcement
agencies.
According to the official returns, in the presidential elections
incumbent President Kurmanbek Bakiyev polled about 77% of votes, and his
closest rival and a candidate from the united opposition, Almazbek
Atambayev, received just 8.4%. However, the Unified People's Movement
called the voting results invalid and falsified.
