Kyrgyz oppositionists cancel protest march

BISHKEK, July 30 (Itar-Tass) - Leaders of the Kyrgyz opposition have
cancelled a march of protest that had been planned for Thursday to the
Issyk-Kul region where a summit of the Collective Security Treaty
Organisation (CSTO) is to be held on July 31 - August 1. Opposition
leader and ex-presidential candidate Almazbek Atambayev announced the
cancellation of the procession speaking to his supporters in Bishkek on
Thursday.
The march's destination was to be the Balykchi city in the Issyk-Kul
region. During the foot march the oppositionists intended to demand the
release of 20 people who were arrested in this city on the presidential
election day on July 23 for an attempt at seizing a polling station.
The republic's authorities warned oppositionists on Thursday that it
is inadmissible to hold any mass protest actions during the informal CSTO
summit that will be held in the Issyk-Kul region.
About 100 opposition supporters that intended to take part in the
protest action are now staying in Bishkek.
