Ministry of Public Health begins Oseltamivir distribution to clinics nationwide next week

BANGKOK, July 30 (TNA) – The Ministry of Public Health is set to begin distributing 800,000 anti-viral Oseltamivir capsules to clinics nationwide on August 3, dispensed at no charge, according to Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai.

Mr Witthaya said the Department of Disease Control would supervise distribution and each clinic will be allowed to stock only five sets of the drug for five patients who contract influenza type A(H1N1).

The clinics are not allowed to charge patients for the drug because the government has already absorbed the cost.

The clinics must strictly follow ministry guidelines for dispensing the drug sets controlled by the ministry, he said, adding that each clinic cannot buy the drug directly from pharmaceutical companies, but must to do so via the Food and Drug Adminstration (FDA).

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said earlier that he wanted the agencies concerned to evaluate the virus control measures continually.

The premier said that the death cases were reportedly due to too late access to drugs, but the experts worried over the drug resistance.
Mr. Abhisit said that to date there has been no report of mutation or drug resistance in Thailand.

The prime minister said the pandemic is tending to spread into the provinces, and that local health volunteers must try their best to prevent the spread of virus into villages. (TNA)
