Spanish police beat up three Russian yachtsmen.
YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, July 31 (Itar-Tass) -- Spanish police in Palma de
Mallorca beat up and detained three Russian yachtsmen participating in the
Copa del Rey international sailing regatta, according to a Friday report
from Executive Director of the Russian Sailing Federation Oskar Konyukhov.
He said crewmembers of the RUS7 yacht Denis Rozhkov, Nikita Khrekov,
and Roman Konstantinov were beaten up late on Tuesday when they were
returning to the hotel.
Eight policemen surrounded the yachtsmen and began beating them up
with batons without any explanations. The three Russians were taken to a
police station and "absurdly charged with attacking and beating up eight
policemen" next day, Konyukhov said in the report.
He quoted yachtsmen Khrekov as saying policemen beat them on the head
and feet, handcuffed the men and kept them in a cell for a day.
"The sportsmen are in a very bad physical state at present, which has
been confirmed by a medical examination," Konyukhov said.
RUS7 team leaders officially requested regatta organizers to interfere
and provide all necessary assistance to have the false charges against
Russian yachtsmen dropped.
The sailing regatta is to start on Saturday.-0-nec
