.URP Moscow branch to approve candidates for city polls.
MOSCOW, August 4 (Itar-Tass) - A conference of the Moscow city branch
of the United Russia party (URP) is expected to approve Tuesday a list of
candidates to take part in elections to the Moscow City Duma (Mosgorduma)
legislature. A common polling day is set for October 11.
It was reported earlier that Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov and First
Deputy Mayor Lyubov Shvetsova might head the list of candidates.
A new make-up of the capital's legislature will be for the first time
elected for a term of five years, not four, as previously was the case.
Seventeen out of 35 members are to be elected in single-seat electoral
districts, and 18 will run on party tickets.
Three political parties are represented in the incumbent Mosgodruma:
the URP has an absolute majority -- 29 seats, the Communist Party of the
Russian Federation (CPRF) has four seats, and members of the Yabloko party
have two seats.
All political forces have already announced their bid to participate
in the upcoming elections. Lists of candidates were earlier compiled in
the city and single-seat districts by the city conferences of the CPRF,
Yabloko, the Patriots of Russia, and the Liberal Demcoratic Party. The
Just Cause party did not decide to put forward a list of its own.
However, it intends to contest polls in at least four single-seat
districts.
A Moscow conference of the Just Russia party will be held on
Wednesday, August 5.
.Patriarch Kirill to visit Vladimir-Volynsky, Pochayev laura.
VLADIMIR-VOLYNSKY, August 4 (Itar-Tass) - Patriarch Kirill of Moscow
and All Russia is to visit this city that was founded by Kievan Prince
Vladimir -- the baptiser of Russia -- 1,021 years ago. The Patriarch will
visit the ancient Assumption Cathedral here.
The Assumption Cathedral in the Vladimir-Volynsky bishopric is the
only extant monument to ancient Russian architecture in Volyn region. The
building of the Cathedral was launched in 1156 and was first mentioned in
1160. Over the centuries it has been repeatedly plundered and damaged. It
was rebuilt in the 18th century, which strongly distorted its look. The
shape close to the original was restored to the Cathedral in a period
between 1896 and 1900 under the direction of architect G. Kotov.
On Tuesday afternoon, Patriarch Kirill will go to the town of
Pochayev, Ternopol Region. He will arrive at the famous Pochyev Laura on
the eve of a memorable date -- the 430th jubilee of the Pochayev Icon of
the Mother of God.
The Pochayev Laura is the second-important monastery in Ukraine. A
legend has it that it was founded by Kievan Cave Monastery monks who fled
from Tatars. It was first menitoned in 1527. It has never been closed
down, although it was under the authority of the Uniats (Catholics of the
Eastern rite) between 1731 and 1831. The Laura's main shrine is the
Pochayev Icon of the Mother of God that was regained by miracle in 1597.
Following the Patriarch's arrival, a night service will be held at
the Laura. On the morning of August 5, the Patriarch will recite a divine
liturgy in conclusion of his ten-day tour of Ukraine.
