Venezuela leader to raise problem of US plans of bases in Colombia
CARACAS, August 10 (Itar-Tass) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez
said on Sunday that he will raise the problem of the U.S. plans to deploy
its military bases in Colombia at a summit of the Union of South American
Nations (UNASUR) that will open in the Ecuadorian capital of Quito on
Monday. Chavez stated in the Sunday show "Allo, Presidente!" that he will
"urge the governments of the Latin American countries to voice their
concerns over this threat."
Chavez emphasized that seven military bases, which Colombia is
planning to provide to the United State for the deployment of the U.S.
troops "poses a threat for Venezuela" and enables the U.S. to commit an
invasion in order to capture Venezuelan abundant oil fields. Meanwhile,
the president noted the Colombian authorities had already started to hold
provocations on the border. He noted that a unit of the Colombian army
crossed the Orinoco border river, landed on the Venezuelan bank and then
came back to Colombia.
