Taiwanese investor lays foundation stone of whisky factory

(KPL) A Taiwan Company, Chunghwa United Telecom collaborated with the Lao government to invest US$1.5 million in building the Lao Construction Bank in Vientiane Capital.
A stone-laying ceremony to mark the beginning of the construction of the Lao Construction Bank was held on 8 August in Vientiane and it is scheduled to be completed in a year’s time. The chairman of this company, Mr Chen Chin Lung, said the bank will be located in the company’s eight storey office block, Phonsinouan Village, Sisattanark district, Vientiane Capital.
Chunghwa United Telecom Company, the majority owner, will own 65 per cent of the company and the Lao government will own the rest of the shares. This company has diverse interests and so it timed the opening of its Lao Royal Liquor Company in Vientiane on the same auspicious day and it would produce the Lao Legend whisky in Laos.
Taiwanese and Chinese in general regard the figure eight as a sign of good luck and the eighth of August is regarded as an auspicious day. Mr Chen invested US$5 million in this whisky venture, now under construction and it is expected to be completed at the end of 2010. Since 2008, Chunghwa United Telecom Company has invested US$20 million in Laos.
