Laos, Thailand agree to set up association of rice exporting countries

(KPL) Laos expressed its support to have Thailand and Vietnam take the lead in setting up an association of rice exporting countries, according to Hinhua report on 15 August.
A senior official of the 41st meeting of the ASEAN Economic Ministers (AEM) said on Saturday that the chief public relations officer of the meeting Chaiya Yimvilai, Laos’ Industry and Commerce Minister Nam Viyaketh showed the support of setting up the association when meeting Thailand’s Commerce Minister Porntiva Nakasai on Saturday morning on the sideline of the AEM meeting and related meetings, officially held from Friday to Sunday in Thai capital Bangkok. The proposed consortium would involve members of the Ayeyawady- Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Co-operation Strategy (ACMECS) group, consisting of Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and Vietnam, said Chaiya, adding that the main purpose of this association is to stabilize rice prices.
The involved countries would attempt to have the association start its operation from the beginning of next year and at the beginning it is expected to be the government-sponsored association, Chaiya said.
Laos has viewed that Thailand and Vietnam have technology and know-how concerning rice farming, hence, the two should coordinate in the establishment of the rice association.
The bilateral agreement is made on the view that the region’s rice production base and food security and safety will be the crucial agenda in the years to come, Chaiya said. The rice exports of Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand are believed to account for over 50 percent of the world’s total annual rice exports.
After agreeing in principle during the bilateral talk with Thailand, Laos has suggested that Thailand and Vietnam establish a working committee for a feasibility study and mechanism, said Chaiya.Meanwhile, for Laos itself the country has potential to produce more rice as the country has over two million hectors of land to grow rice as currently of the total land over 900,000 hectors have been used for rice farming, Chaiya said.
