PRESIDENT: CASES LIKE MUNIR`S SHOULD NOT RECUR
Jakarta, Aug 21 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has reminded the Army's Special Troops Command (Kopassus) to maintain security and prevent cases like human rights activist Munir's from happening again.
In his directives to Kopassus soldiers at the command's headquarters in Cijantung, East Jakarta, on Thursday, the President asked them to maintain their accountability by keeping and protecting security at home in accordance with the law and 1945 Constitution.
"Maintain your accountability in accordance with the law and 1945 Constitution. Our bad experiences in the past cases such as the so-called 'petrus' or mysterious extra-judicial shootings, abductions, and cases such human rights activist Munir's should not recur," the president told the Kopassus soldiers.
The head of state said special operations in the past like mysterious shootings and abductions should no longer be applied in security management at home.
All parties, especially the National Defense Forces (TNI) soldiers and the National Police (Polri) personnel should carry out their main tasks and functions properly and correctly in accordance with the law and 1945 Constitution, he said.
The president said the state would not hesitate to uphold the legal supremacy in fighting terrorism, separatist groups, and armed violence but it would be carried out transparently, constitutionally, and accountably.
Earlier in the day, the president received a medal of honor from the Kopasus for his support and services to the red-beret corps.
The medal was presented to the President by Army Chief of Staff General Agustadi Sasongko Purnomo at a ceremony at the Kopassus Headquarters in Cijantung.
Present at the ceremony were Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono, Justice and Human Rights Minister Andi Mattalatta, Foreign Affairs Minister Hassan Wirayuda, Minister/State Secretary Hatta Rajasa, Cabinet Secretary Sudi Silalahi, and other top military officials.
Before the medal presenting ceremony, President Yudhoyono, accompanied by General Agustadi Sasongko Purnomo and Kopassus Commander Pramono Edhie Wibowo, watched a demonstration of the skills of the command's anti-terror unit to deal with terrorism in Indonesia.
