PKS AGAINST POLICE`S PLAN TO MONITOR RELIGIOUS SERMONS
Jakarta, Aug 22 (ANTARA) - The Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) has criticized the police's decision to increase supervision on religous propagation and sermons.
"This has the potential of becoming source of new tension between the Moslem community and the government," party spokesman Mutammimul Ula said here on Saturday.
Mutammimul said "we must not become a police state which is as dangerous as a military state."
The member of the Commission I of the House of Representatives said his party's stance about the issue was clear, namely opposing it.
"The first reason is as I have said it will create a source of new tension between the Moslem community and the government and in this case the Moslem community will be the suspected party," he said.
Referring to terms that have been used in connection with the issuance of the policy such as "propagation which is provocative and against the law" Mutammimul said that "they are potential to be used politically and flexibly."
He said the police should not have panicked in dealing with terrorists whose number was actually very small.
"Meaning the police must not then direct their attention to the majority in dealing with the small number of terrorists. This would take a lot of energy," he said.
He said that the police also had a task of eradicating other kinds of crimes besides terrorism such as drug abuse and other crimes that caused a large damage on the community.
He said the police must be wise and rational. "Do not let democracy turn into a police state. This is as dangerous as a military state," he said.
