ANTI-TERROR COOPERATION WITH OTHER COUNTRIES TO BE EXPANDED

Jakarta, Aug 24 (ANTARA) - Anti-terror cooperation between Indonesia and other countries will be expanded, coordinating ministry for political, legal and security affairs' anti terror desk chairman Insp Gen Ansyaad Mbai said here on Monday.

"Anti-terror cooperation will be expanded not only with ASEAN countries but also with countries outside ASEAN," Ansyaad said.

He said Indonesia had so far established anti-terror cooperation with a number of countries such as Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Kuwait, Afghanistan, and Turkey.

"Even Indonesia and Turkey had 'joint working group' to manage terrorism, and we will probably explore a similar type of cooperation with other countries," Ansyaad said.

He said antiterror cooperation with a number of countries was focused on persuasive or soft power terror management by giving true knowledge and understanding about Islam and thereby counter the radicalism that can create terrorism.

"But of course the cooperation with repressive manner or hard power by mobilizing police or military power will not be ignored," he said.

Meanwhile, a member of the House of Representatives' Commission-I for defense affairs Andreas Pareira said here on Monday that the military's involvement in the fight afgainst terrorism must be done according to certain procedures.

"The involvement must be based on what is known as 'military assignment beyond war duties' as stipulated in the Law on the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI)," Andreas Pareira said.

He made the remarks in response to public opinion on the need for TNI to be involved in the fight against terror acts which posed threats to state security.

"For us in the DPR's Commission I, terrorism is a disturbance to the country's security in the form of crime on an enormous scale," Pareira said.

However, no matter how enormous , a terror act remains a criminal act. "It is a crime against humanity that should be handled with law enforcement based on the principles of a law-abiding state," he said.

This means, he said, that the terror acts should not be handled in the way the military usually uses, or with military force.
