Sepon Gold and Copper Mine to increase copper volume to 80,000 tonnes

(KPL) MMG would increase its copper production at the Sepon Gold and Copper Mine from 60,000 to 80,000 tonnes per year, according to Mr ZHOU Zhongshu, President of China Minmetals Corporation, said at a press conference held in Vientiane capital, last Friday.
Mr Zhou Zhongshu said that, “we believed that Sepon would be the premier mining operation in mainland South East Asia.
The Minerals and Metals Group (MMG) would actively support the expansion of the Lao processing industry, especially copper and gold”.
The Sepon Gold and Copper Mine is not only an important mining project for Laos but an important part of the Minmentals newly formed subsidiary MMG. He said that this was his first visit to Laos after the acquisition of former QZ Minerals assets, which included the Sepon Gold and Copper Mine.
The visit today is to commence building a long term partnership between China Minmetals, MMG in Australia and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, he said.
Laos, China and Australia are linked by their position in the fast developing Asia Pacific Region, he said, the bond between Laos and Australia is one of a close friendship and as a result of the recent transaction we now add the comradeship between Laos and China.
He continued that the comradeship had created through shared political ideologies and similar experiences of economic transition.
The Minmetals and the MMG are also committed to not only the meeting, but where possible improving, performance on safety, health and the environment.
“Economic benefits alone are insufficient if we cannot guarantee the safety and health of our employees,” he said.
He added that the attention to these areas would be paramount as we build our business in Laos and internationally.
The environment is also a finite natural resource that needs to be protected, he said.
The MMG is committed to minimising the effects if mining in the natural environment and the rehabilitation of areas where mining activities have taken place, he said.
Laos is blessed with significant hydropower potential and we will be looking to support the development of this industry in the future. Our Sepon operations will provide a significant domestic market and avoid the need to export energy to neighbouring countries.
