Eight rain related deaths in UP; season's toll touches 62

Lucknow, Aug 26 (PTI) Flood and rains claimed eight
more lives in India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh since
Tuesday, taking the season's toll to 62, officials sources
said here Wednesday.

According to government figures, nine persons were
killed in Bahraich, three in Pilibhit, 12 in Lakimpur, eight
in Siddharthnagar, three in Gorakhpur, five in Gonda, 13 in
Sitapur four each in Faizabad and Kushinagar and one in
Balrampur.

The eight fresh deaths, reported from Sitapur,
Lakhimpur and Siddhartnagar districts, were caused due to rain
related incidents like felling of trees, house collapse and
drowning in flood waters, they said.

According to the daily report of Central Water
Commission (CWC), river Ganga was rising in some areas of
Allahabad, Mirzapur and Varanasi but was below danger mark in
these districts.

While Gomti is also rising in Lucknow, river Sharda in
rising in Palliakalan (Lakhimpur).

All the other rivers are receding with light or no
rains in past 24 hours in the state, the CWC report said.

The state government has issued directives to the
concerned district magistrates to keep an eye on the situation
and effectively monitor relief and rescue operations, while
also providing compensation to the affected families. PTI
