SOME 61 FOREIGN YACHTS VISIT WAKATOBI, SE SULAWESI

Wangi-Wangi, S.E. Sulawesi, Aug 27 (ANTARA) - Some 61 foreign yachts have visited Wakatobi district, South East Sulawesi, Indonesia, since last August 3 under the "Wakatobi Sail Indonesia 2009" program, a local official said.

Wakatobi Deputy District Chief Hugua said here on Thursday, the visits of the yachts carrying foreign tourists had proven that Wakatobi with its submarine park had great tourism potential.
"They (the tourists) come to enjoy the beauty of Wakatobi coral reefs," he said, adding that this would have a positive impact on the region's economy.

Wakatobi with its 1.3 million hectares of marine tourism potentials has some 750 kinds of coral reefs, while the Caribbean Sea only had 50 kinds and the Red Sea 300, he said.

Mostly manned by small families (husband, wife, son or daughter), the yachts started out from Darwin, Australia, and came to Wakatobi via Saumlaki, Masohi, Banda, Namlea (Maluku), Ternate (North Maluku), Bunaken (North Sulawesi), and Banggai (Central Sulawesi).

From Wakatobi, the foreign yachts will proceed to Ende district, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) province, Braw, Tarakan (East Kalimantan) and Bangka Belitung province in Sumatra before leaving Indonesia.

In the meantime, Keith Harding, one of the foreign tourists expressed gratitude for the hospitality of the Wakatobi community.

"We will come back to Wakatobi," Keith Harding said.

A female Australian tourist, known only as Meicy, celebrated her 40th birthday in Wakatobi.

The Wakatobi marine tourist resort is also known as the "Under the Sea Paradise at the World Coral Triangle". ***2***
