MAGNITUDE-5.7 EARTHQUAKE JOLTS GORONTALO, INDONESIA
Jakarta, Aug. 27 (ANTARA) - An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale jolted Gorontalo, northern Sulawesi, Indonesia, on Thursday at 7.27 am local time.
The temblor's epicenter was located at 0.02 degrees northern latitude and 123.63 degrees eastern longitude (BT), at a depth of around 95 km below sea level, about 87 km southeast of Gorontalo, or in the Tomini Gulf , according to information from the Gorontalo meteorological and geophysics office here.
The tremor, which did not have the potential to cause a tsunami, was felt quite strongly by local residents, who rushed out of their homes in panic.
"We were worried as the earthquake's intensity got stronger after a few seconds, therefore, we immediately rushed out of our homes," Ismail, an inhabitant of Gorontalo, said.
Last November 2008, Gorontalo was rocked by a powerful tectonic earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale, which damaged hundreds of houses and killed two persons.
Indonesia is prone to seismic upheavals due to its location on the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire", an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.
An earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter scale jolted Aceh Province, northern Sumatra, in the wee hours of Wednesday (Aug. 26).
On Monday (Aug. 24), temblors measuring 5.5 and 5.0 on the Richter scale respectively shook West Sumatra and West Nusa Tenggara
West Sumatra had been shaken by a series of temblors over the past one week.
