Samsung leads Chinese market in 3G cellphone service: survey

SEOUL, Aug. 30 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's Samsung Electronics led the market in 3G
video cellphone service in China in the first few months of the launch of the
service, a survey said Sunday.
China hosts three different cellphone services: TD-SCDMA, CDMA-2000(EVDO) and
WCDMA. Samsung leads in two of the categories, TD-SCDMA and CDMA-2000(EVDO),
according to market researcher GfK.
From May to July, Samsung secured a 44.1 percent share of the CDMA-2000 market,
which is based on 3G video technology, according to the research firm.
Samsung also secured 23.6 percent of the market that is backed by the TD-SCDMA
technology China Mobile has chartered, according to the survey.
LG Electronics, another South Korean company, came in second in the 3D category,
while in the WCDMA market, Samsung finished fourth.
South Korea first commercialized CDMA in 1996, while China has independently
developed its own 3G service system. China plans to expand 3G service to 500
different cities by the end of this year.
Samsung set up a research center in China in 2003 in an effort to lead in both
TD-SCDMA and next-generation TD-HSDPA technologies.
