Pak`s Harpoon missile changes against Indian interest: Mehta
New Delhi, Aug 31 (PTI) India Monday viewed with
concern reports that Pakistan is illegally modifying American
Harpoon missiles with an apparent aim of targeting the country
and said it confirms its apprehensions voiced from time to
time.
This shows the "danger of proliferation and we have
been telling this from time to time," outgoing Naval Chief
Admiral Sureesh Mehta told reporters here while commenting on
a US media report about modification of the anti-ship
missiles.
"This has nothing to do with (Pakistan's) self defence
and it is against Indian interest," Mehta said soon after
handing over charge to his successor Admiral Nirmal Verma.
Sources in the government said India has taken note of
the report as it views such developments with concern.
India is assessing the ramifications of the
development, sources said, adding if necessary, will it take
up the matter with the US and Pakistan.
New Delhi has been conveying to the US that much of
its military and financial aid was being diverted to building
Pakistan's military capabilities directed against India.
Admiral Verma, when asked to comment on the
development, said the Navy's endeavour would be to ensure
nobody came within the striking distance of India and launch
such missiles.
"Our endeavour during maritime operations is to ensure
that no body comes within a (striking) distance and launches
such missiles," he said. PTI
