Man arrested for raping German girl 12 years ago
New Delhi, Aug 31 (PTI) A man, who fled from Germany
after allegedly raping a teenager there 12 years ago, was
arrested in Indian capital of Delhi, police said Monday.
Jaswant Singh (36), who runs a transport company here,
was caught from his residence in north-west Delhi's Adarsh
Nagar late Sunday night, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime)
Neeraj Thakur told reporters here.
Singh, who allegedly raped a 17-year-old girl in a
park in Germany's Darmstadt on the night of August one in 1997
along with his two friends, will be tried in New Delhi as
Berlin has not sought his extradition, he said.
The arrest comes following "painstaking"
investigations for over eight months after Germany approached
New Delhi last year.
Singh, hailing from Miani in Punjab (India's northern
state), allegedly dragged the girl, who was walking towards
her home, into a park and raped her. "He slapped her when she
resisted and then raped her. His two friends Karan Singh and
Mohd Shahzad, a Pakistani national, also raped her," Thakur
said.
Singh, who was illegally staying in Germany, left for
Holland soon after his two friends were arrested. He then
reached Delhi.
The involvement of Singh and two others came to light
when the owner of 'Le Petit' restaurant, where he was working
as a chef, overheard his two workers talking about the
incident and informed police about it. (More) PTI
