GCC Ministerial Council Concludes Meeting

Jeddah, September 02, SPA -- The Foreign Ministers of Gulf
Cooperation Council (GCC) states concluded here on Tuesday evening
their 112th session of the Ministerial Council.

The delegation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the session was
headed by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr. Nizar bin Obaid
Madani.

In its statement, the Council commended the visit paid to the
Islamic Republic of Iran by Oman's Sultan Qaboos bin Said, who is the
current chairman of the Supreme Council, and its positive results,
also praising the Sultan's visions aimed at strengthening cooperation
between the two sides to serve the common interests and strengthen
security and stability in the region.

The Council reaffirmed its support for the call launched by the
Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al
Saud at Arab Economic Summit held in Kuwait, also praising what has
been achieved at the level of Arab reconciliation and the return of
cohesion and solidarity to the Arab ranks to face the difficult
circumstances with an Arab strong and collective commitment to meet
the challenges and risks.

The Council welcomed the visit paid to the United States of America
by Kuwait's Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and his
talks with U.S. President Barack Obama, also hailing the fruitful
results of the visit on overall issues of common interest,
particularly the Palestinian issue and the enhancement of security
and stability in the region.

The Ministerial Council also praised the positive results in the
first joint ministerial meeting of the GCC countries and the ASEAN
friendly states and expressed appreciation for the great efforts made
by Bahrain in the preparation and excellent organization of the work
of the meeting, stressing the importance of what was agreed upon in
the final statement on developing relations for building a new
partnership at regional and international arenas in economic,
cultural, scientific and social fields.

The Council also welcomed the statement issued by the Joint
Ministerial Meeting of the strategic dialogue between the GCC and the
Republic of Turkey, which was held on July 8, 2009 in Istanbul,
commending its results in political, strategic and economic fields.

The Council welcomed the signing of a free trade agreement between
the GCC and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) comprising
Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein on June 22, 2009 in
the Norwegian city of Hamar.

The Council commended the efforts and pre-emptive security measures
undertaken by security apparatuses in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,
Bahrain and Kuwait to detect and thwart terrorist plots.

The Ministerial Council congratulated the Custodian of the Two
Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince Sultan
bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Deputy Premier, Minister of Defense and
Aviation and Inspector General, Prince Naif bin Abdulaziz, Second
Deputy Premier and Minister of Interior, and the Saudi people on the
safety of Prince Mohammed bin Naif bin Abdulaziz, Assistant Interior
Minister for Security Affairs from the criminal attempt on his life.

The Ministerial Council strongly condemned this heinous attempt on
Prince Mohammad's life, stressing that these terrorist acts will not
succeed in destabilization of security, peace and stability enjoyed
by Saudi Arabia under its wise leadership which has spared no efforts
in achieving prosperity, security and safety for citizens and
residents.

The Council affirmed its stand and solidarity with Saudi Arabia in
consolidating security and stability as the region's security is
indivisible.


Commenting on the Palestinian issue and the peace process in the
Middle East, the Council commended the contents of the message
addressed by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin
Abdulaziz Al Saud to President Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian
National Authority on the occasion of the 6th Conference of Fatah
held in Bethlehem, noting that the message came at an important time
for the Palestinian cause and in line with the positions of the GCC
states in support of the Palestinian rights as well as with the
repeated calls of the GCC leaders and their affirmation that the
Palestinian national unity is the shield for the just cause of the
Palestinian people.
