VILLAGER KILLED IN ELEPHANT ATTACK
Pekanbaru, Sept 4 (ANTARA) - A resident of Lubuk Kandis hamlet, Pauh Ranap village, in Indragiri Hulu, Riau, was killed after a herd of elephants attacked his house.
Rinto Lumban Gaol (27) was killed early on Thursday when his house was attacked by elephants. His wife whom he married just four months ago, however, survived the incident.
"The couple came from North Sumatra and worked on a plantation belonging to Rinto's brother in Lubuk Kandis," the head of Natural Resource Conservation for Riau, Edi Susanto, said.
The death was the second in the region this year. Tens of wild elephants attacked and killed Julinus, a grandpa of 83 years old, in Balai Makam village in Mandau, Bengkalis, on March 4.
Edi Susanto said the incident in the wee hours on Thursday happened while Rinto and his wife were taking a rest in their house in an oilpalm plantation where they were working.
His wife said a herd of elephants totalling around 15 suddenly besieged the area and destroyed the house, he said.
He said the two managed to come out of the house and Rinto called on his wife to run and ask for help from neighbours. Rinto was unlucky. He was trapped in the middle of a herd of angry animals. He died after being trampled by a female elephant.
"His body was crushed and almost unrecognizable," Susanto said.
Susanto said the place where the incident happened was within the habitat of the elephants and protected. The area was within the habitat of "Peranap" elephants whose population was estimated at 50 heads.
Lubuk Kandis is the home range of elephants in Perapan towards the Tesso Nilo National Park.
The frequency of conflicts between human beings and elephants in the area is high due to increasing conversion of the animal's habitat into oilpalm plantations and industrial forests.
The chief of the Indragiri Hulu police resort, Adjunct Senior Commissioner Robinso DP said that the victim's body was found 2.5 hours after the incident, when his wife and three other villagers arrived at the scene at around 3am.
The location is quite isolated and therefore help has been later. The location is around 35 kilometers from the capital of Peranap subdistrict or 26 kilometers from a residential area in the Pauh Ranap village, he said.
Rinto's family had taken the body to be buried in his home village in Tarutung, North Sumatra.
