Frontier guards’ funeral in Shymkent

Shymkent, September 10, 2009 (Khabar) - 2 officers of the frontier service who were killed in an “MI-8” helicopter crash have been buried in Shymkent. The aircraft crashed in mountains in the region of the Ugamsk gorge during the performance of a battle mission by border patrol agents. There were 13 people on board, 10 of whom were reported dead. The president Nursultan Nazarbayev has expressed his deepest condolences to the families of those involved in the incident. The head of state has asked the government to provide financial assistance and support to the families of the victims as well as those injured in the crash.

The families and colleagues of Major Dauletbek Sultanbekov and Colonel Ruslan Zakiyev laid them to rest. Ruslan Alimoldanovich was promoted a few days ago as he was appointed as the deputy chief of general staff of the republic’s frontier service. However, he did not manage to take up his new position.

Bolat Zakiyev, retired major general:
- I think the best memory of him would be his attitude towards his work. I still can’t talk about him in the past tense yet.

The border guards were killed whilst fulfilling their border control duties in the ravines of the Ugam mountain range. There are paths in this area which connect Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. Gunmen from Uzbekistan territory took advantage of this and penetrated the territory of Kazakhstan.

Abdrazak Iliyasov, commander-in-chief of “Ontustik” Regional Division of Kazakhstan National Security Committee frontier service:
- 6 armed criminals who planned to hide either in the Kazakh of Kyrgyz territory escaped from a place of confinement there. Due to this, the state border was covered there and an effective combat strength consisting of 2 posts and a frontier squad was directed there as they were armed. This reconnaissance and search action had the objective of examining the location and safeguarding the security of our borders and people.

The “Arlan” group of the Saryagash detachment was heading for the mountainous region to search for the armed group. During this operation, the helicopter was making a landing when the crash took place. The cause of the accident is being investigated by a specially created inter-departmental commission. The funeral of 8 more border guards who were killed including officers, warrant officers and professional soldiers will be held in the Saryagash district near their duty station. All of them will be granted government decorations on the decision of the command of the “Ontustik” regional division.
