.FC committee to discuss resetting of RF-US parliamentary ties.
MOSCOW, September 21 (Itar-Tass) -- The resetting of Russian-U.S.
parliamentary relations will be discussed at an enlarged meeting of the
Federation Council Committee for International Affairs.
U.S. Ambassador in Moscow John Beyrle, members of the cooperation group Federation Council -
U.S. Senate, officials of the Russian Foreign Ministry and political
analysts will participate in the meeting.
"We offer to discuss the theme "Continued resetting. Russian-U.S.
parliamentary ties in new realities," committee's chairman Mikhail
Margelov told Itar-Tass. According to him, the participants will have "to
ponder over the content of the interparliamentary work in new conditions."
The adjustment of Russian-U.S. relations "is a complex process and can
proceed in various dimensions," the senator believes. He noted that "the
experience showed fruitful ties between the lawmakers of the counties even
in the period, when it seemed to some people that the second Cold War had
started."
In the dialogue "we managed to cool down the passions and inform the
executive authorities about the parliamentary point of view on "the good
and the evil", Margelov added. He believes that in Russian-U.S. relations
"there would be more confrontation without these conciliatory
interparliamentary dialogues." The senator is confident that "the
relations between the lawmakers contributed in progress to the resetting
to some extent, though the two countries have amassed many mutual claims
for the last ten years."
The senator believes that "after Washington had shelved its plans to
deploy elements of its missile defense system in Poland and the Czech
Republic it is possible to speak about the start of resetting." According
to him, this means that "Washington raises the priority of relations with
Moscow, but the problem is in the details of resetting, in what the sides
should go into mutual concessions winning in the main cause."
Margelov expressed hope that during the discussions the countries
"would manage to reset on the parliamentary level." So, each side should
begin from itself, he pointed out.
