SLEEPY DRIVERS AND EXCEEDING SPEED LIMIT CAUSE OF FATAL ACCIDENTS
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 25 (Bernama)-- Driving above the speed limit, uncertain
weather and sleepy drivers are the three main causes of fatal accidents which
occurred during the current festive season.
Road Safety Department (RSD) director-general Suret Singh said these
factors were identified in the Ops Sikap 20 which was launched on Sept 13 to
curb road accidents during the Aidilfitri celebration.
Since the operation was launch, 210 people had been killed in road
accidents, he told reporters after distributing crash helmets to motorcyclists
at the Sungai Besi toll plaza here Friday.
Suret Singh said the Transport Ministry and the Road Safety Department had
outlined 10 golden rules on road safety which should be observed by all
motorists.
He said motorists should plan their journey ahead and ensure their vehicles
were in good condition with the brakes and signal lights functioning before
starting their journey.
The don'ts included tailgating, exceeding the speed limit and overtaking, he
added.
He said those travelling in cars, including the rear passengers, should
fasten their seat belts.
For motorcyclists and the pillion riders, they are advised to use crash
helmets approved by SIRIM and wear bright coloured shirts so that they could be
easily seen by other road users, he added.
