IAEA should inspect Iran`s uranium enrichment plant - Medvedev
PITTSBURGH, September 26 (Itar-Tass) -- Iran's construction of a new
uranium enrichment plant "runs counter to the demands of the UN Security
Council, and Russia, together with the other participants in the
international sextet, believes that the IAEA must inspect this facility,"
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev told the final conference ending his
visit to the United States, where he participated in the UN General
Assembly session and the G20 summit.
"This situation (involving Iran's nuclear program) requires unflagging
attention," Medvedev said. "Russia believes that the IAEA should conduct
an inspection without any delay, and, as a member of that organization, it
will promote this process. We are calling upon Iran to be cooperative to
the maximum extent."
"The information that has been received so far has increased our wish
to achieve concrete and verifiable results," the Russian president said.
"The meeting between the international sextet and Iranian officials due on
October 1 will be a chance for that country to demonstrate its goodwill
and present convincing proof it wishes to use its research for peaceful
purposes."
"The news about the construction of this plant came as a surprise to
all. It was a classified construction project, and this is the most grave
aspect in this situation," he said. "If Iran fails to demonstrate its wish
to cooperate, we must create comfortable conditions for it to encourage
cooperation, a system of incentives. If the incentives fail, too, then
other mechanisms will be harnessed, the ones I have already mentioned."
