Iran's uranium plant runs counter to UN SC demands - Medvedev.
PITTSBURG, September 26 (Itar-Tass) -- Iran's construction of a new uranium enrichment plant "runs counter to the demands of the UN Security Council, and Russia, together with the other participants in the sextet, believes that the IAEA must inspect this facility," Russian President Dmitry Medvedev told the final conference ending his visit to the United States, where he participated in the UN General Assembly session and the G20 summit.
"The news about this new plant came as a surprise to all. It was a
classified construction project, and this is the most grave aspect in this
situation," he said. "If Iran fails to demonstrate its wish to cooperate,
we must create comfortable conditions for it to encourage cooperation, a
system of incentives. If the incentives fail, too, then other mechanisms
will be harnessed, the ones I have already mentioned."
.US decision on ABM defense paves way for new configuration-Medvedev.
PITTSBURGH, September 26 (Itar-Tass) -- The United States' decision to
drop its plans for placing missile defense components in Eastern Europe
paves the way for creating a new defense configuration that will protect
all countries, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev told a news conference at
the end of his visit to the United States. Medvedev took part in the
general political debate at the UN General Assembly session and in the G20
summit conference.
"We have ideas of how to implement it," he said.
Medvedev confirmed the possibility of concluding a new strategic arms
missile treaty with the United States by December.
"I have the feeling we are moving on well," he said.
The Russian president spoke highly of the UN Security Council's
resolution.
"It is a good resolution, it makes a tangible contribution to the
non-proliferation and reduction of nuclear arms," Medvedev said adding
that Russia supported the United States on the issue.
He believes that the very instance the national leaders voted for the
Security Council's resolution indicates the framework of the UN Security
Council and the United Nations has grown stronger.
.Russian delegation at arms talks with US has wide mandate-Medvedev.
PITTSBURGH, September 26 (Itar-Tass) -- The Russian delegation
dispatched to Europe for strategic arms talks with the United States has a
wide mandate, and the signing of an agreement may be expected by December,
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev told a news conference ending his visit
to the United States, where he attended the UN General Assembly session
and the G20 summit.
"There has been a good start, we may come to terms by December. The
chances are good. This is a question of narrowing differences," he said.
Medvedev believes that the signing of a new strategic arms treaty may
take place not necessarily in the United States.
"We can do that any place, in Europe, Russia, or the United States,
provided we have the stuff ready," Medvedev said.
.Russia will not place Iskander rockets in Kaliningrad - Medvedev.
PITTSBURGH, September 26 (Itar-Tass) -- Russian President Dmitry
Medvedev has declared that Russia will not place its Iskander rocket
launchers in the westernmost exclave region of Kaliningrad.
As he addressed a news conference following his visit to the United
States for the UN General Assembly session and the G20 summit, Medvedev
recalled that he had declared plans for bringing Iskander rockets to
Kaliningrad as a countermeasure to US plans for creating a third missile
defense site in Europe.
"Now, that that decision has been canceled, I, naturally, will make a
decision against the deployment of Iskander rockets in the corresponding
region of our country," he said.
.Medvedev says he has no 'supernatural presidential ambitions'.
PITTSBURGH, September 26 (Itar-Tass) -- Russian President Dmitry
Medvedev has confirmed that he does not have what he described as
"supernatural presidential ambitions."
"It is true that I have no supernatural presidential ambitions," he
told a news conference ending his visit to the Untied States for the UN
General Assembly session and the G20 summit. "The person who does have
them will never become president, because they will devour him from the
inside."
Asked about what he thought about the president's job, Medvedev said
that over the past eighteen months his ideas of it had changed a great
deal.
"This is a no easy job, one has to stay 'plugged-in' all the way,"
Medvedev said. As he compared his current activity with any other posts,
Medvedev pointed to what looked as the main distinction to him - "any
other official has a superior who can make a decision for you."
"In the president's situation this is impossible. You are aware it is
on your actions that the success of the state depends, and this gives you
strength during such no easy missions like this one," Medvedev said.
One of the debit side of his work he mentioned "the scale of tasks and
opportunity to participate in addressing them," and on the debit side "the
utter lack of spare time."
