QUAKE VICTIMS IN PENGALENGAN APPRECIATE MALAYSIAN STUDENTS' ASSISTANCE

BANDUNG, Sept 26 (Bernama) -- Hundreds of earthquake victims in Desa Sidamukti, Pengalengan district, West Java, have expressed appreciation for the help and assistance given by the Malaysian students here during the recent catastrophe.

Pengalengan youth leader Danial Ridwan said that although the student
volunteers numbered only 40, their spirit of brotherhood and genuine concern for
the victims were commendable.

"Yes. Their number is relatively small for over 1,400 residents in the
village, but the help that they offered meant so much to those whose houses
were badly destroyed by the quake which hit on Sept 2," he told Bernama here.

He said the group, comprising mostly medical students in Jakarta and here,
was the first voluntary rescue team to arrived in Desa Sidamukti.

They were led by Malaysian Students Department Director Dr Junaidi Abu
Bakar.

Over 1,000 victims are still living in the makeshift tents, while the others
have returned home.

Danial said that right now they were hoping for donations to rebuild the
mosque which was destroyed by the quake.

"Other infrastructures are being taken care of by the local authority, but
we don't know when the mosque will be rebuilt," said Danial who can be contacted
at 0062-81320160888.

Meanwhile, Dr Junaidi said he was prompted to coordinate the voluntary team
by the continuous support from Malaysian leaders back home.

"The Malaysian Higher Education Minister, Mohamed Khaled Nordin, had
encouraged us to mix with the local community in good and bad times.

"Prior to this, Malaysian Youth and Sports Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek had
also announced that a Malaysian students volunteer team would be set up for
times like this, and we have proven that it can be done," he added.
