Presidents holds meeting on Astana development
Astana, October 08, 2009 (Khabar) - Nursultan Nazarbayev held a meeting on the development of the capital city following a trip around Astana’s old town.
Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of Kazakhstan:
- I would like to point out that the city is much cleaner now. There is no dust in the city and the city looks organized. Now it certainly has the capital city’s charm.
Meetings devoted to the development to Astana are regularly held by Nursultan Nazarbayev. At the beginning of each meeting, the Astana mayor introduces a report on the work done and the current state of matters.
Imangali Tasmagambetov, Astana mayor:
- Over 10 years, the city’s area has expanded 2.5 times to reach 72 thousand hectares. The city’s population has doubled. The gross regional product has enlarged by 17 times. A total of 195 billion tenge has been invested into Astana to date.
Imangali Tasmagambetov also stated that before the end of this year, another 1 million 250 thousand square metres of housing will be built in Astana. Thanks to the government’s support, the construction sector retained its growth rates. Meanwhile, 19 thousand shared construction participants have already got their new flats while another 18 thousands are on the waiting list. Around 90 billion tenge has this year been sent to the support of small and medium sized businesses while 10 billion was soaked into the Road Map Programs which provided 4 thousand new jobs. The feasibility study of the ring circuit power line around Astana is about to be completed. The project will help the city get rid of energy shortage. Preparations for winter are also completed with the heating season underway. While at the meeting, Nursultan Nazarbayev said that Astana should provide the most comfortable conditions for local residents and the city’s guests. Such a measure should be applied in all spheres. Much has already been completed in this regard but there is still a lot to be done.

- For many city residents, utilities turned into a night mare. People have to spend hours in stuffy rooms. The city administration has to solve such acute issues.
A quarter of the Astana residents are aged between 14 and 29 and the city is among the leaders around the Republic regarding this index. The President stated that young people are paid little attention to. There is a shortage of hostels, students’ outpatients’ clinics, and gyms are unaffordable. The President asked for special students’ preferences to be introduced.

- Have a look at the prices in hotels and restaurants which shock both foreigners and local people. Such institutions should be aimed at the middle class which is the majority of people coming to Astana.
Nursultan Nazarbayev also paid special attention to the issues the city guests face in the capital. He also stated that Astana is likely to become the centre of mass tourism. The world becomes more and more interested in Kazakhstan but it is still difficult to acquire information about the country. Participants in the meeting also found a solution to the issues of Astana’s water supplies and sewage.
