ANTARA'S CHIEF: INTERNET NO THREAT TO NEWS AGENCIES
Beijing, Oct. 13 (ANTARA) - The internet and multimedia technology developments are no threat to news content providers including news agencies, President Director of Indonesia's national news agency, ANTARA, Dr. Ahmad Mukhlis Yusuf, said recently.
"Such a condition actually gives a new opportunity and opens a new market which should be taken up," Mukhlis said here last Saturday when visiting China's news agency, Xinhua.
On the occasion, Mukhlis, concurrently the president of the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA), was received by Xinhua's Chief Editor Ping He.
Ahmad Mukhlis Yusuf was in China's capital city to attend the World Media Summit which was also participated in by 170 chief executive officers (CEO) including Rupert Murdoch who is the boss of News Corporation.
Both Xinhua and ANTARA provide news contents on the multimedia basis including news stories in the forms of text, photos and audio visual, he said, adding that ANTARA is now developing information services through cellular phones with very low prices.
The Indonesian national news agency is also dealing with a website -- www.antaranews.com -- serving as the window of information on Indonesia under the tagline - Indonesia, One Click Away -. The website is expected to serve as an information centre to those who need news on Indonesia.
"People may be interested in social online networks like Facebook, Twitter, mySpace, and YouTube but when they look for accurate, objective and fair news, they will turn to traditional media like news agencies," he said.
In order to maintain their presence in the digital era, media companies should consistently develop values of the press like accuracy, objectiveness, fairness and balance.
"Those are keys for traditional media like news agencies in the face of new genre of media like the internet and other social online networks. Whatever the technology is, whatever the way of the distribution is and whatever the type of media is, accurate contents must be important and needed," he said.
Meanwhile, Ping He expressed intention to enhance cooperation with ANTARA through the exchanges of news and journalists.
