INDONESIA MANAGES TO PUT DIVERSE INTERESTS INTO CONSTITUTION, IDEA

Jakarta, Oct 12 (ANTARA) - Indonesia is considered one of the countries in the world able to put the interest of all its diverse people in the state's constitution, an official said.

"Indonesia's 1945 Constitution contains all aspects that can support diverse life in Indonesia such as the five basic principles of the Republic Indonesia. The constitution has strengthened Indonesia's relations though they may not be in the same tribal or religious belief," Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific Programme of the inter-state organization Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) Andrew Ellis stated here on Monday.

Andrew made the remarks during a press conference before the implementation of the South-South Regional Symposium on Constitutional Design for Diversity and Conflicts in Asia at Four Seasons Hotel, Jakarta, from Oct 12 to 15.

However, Andrew added, Indonesia must also consider the effective management of its diverse society as a challenge for future better management.

"No democracy is perfect. I think there is always room for the continuation of building democracy in any country in the world," Andrew added.

The South-South Symposium on Constitutional Design for Diversity and Conflicts in Asia is held by the Indonesian government, in this case the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in association with the IDEA and the Non-Aligned Movement Centre for South-South Technical Cooperation (NAM CSSTC).

Participating in the event are 35 delegates from 19 countries in Asia and the Pacific, Europe, and Latin America, and the United States.

Among the countries sending their delegates to the meeting are Malaysia, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, Germany, Thailand, Nepal, India, Mexico, the US and Kenya.

The symposium will take the form of discussions in which the participants will share their country's experience in handling the challenge of diversity among their people and the potential conflicts that may arise.

The result of discussions will be put in the symposium's official website www.constitution.net.org, and downloadable by the public.

"It is hoped that the symposium's conclusions can be used as reference for the public in dealing with diversity challenges in their own countries," said Andrew.

Meanwhile, Deputy Director for Technical Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dinar Sinurat, said Indonesia's image as a country which managed to accommodate all the diverse interests into a constitution can be a positive development for the country.

"From the business point of view, for example, many foreign investors will be interested in making an investment in Indonesia because they know Indonesia is a safe country," Sinurat said.

By attending the discussions, she added, Indonesia can also learn a lesson from the other countries on ways to develop the constitution for a better format. ***5***
