Lao Sepak Takraw team to test competitive skills

(KPL) The Lao National Sepak Takraw team, the Lao Sepak Takraw Federation and the SEA Games Committee have been preparing a four-nation Sepak Takraw Test Tournament to test the competitive skills of the athletes for the upcoming 25th SEA Games scheduled for 9-18 December 2009 in Vientiane.
The federation held a press conference on Monday, urging the public to cheer the players on October 16 and 17.
Sepak Takraw Federation President Adsaphangthong Siphandone said that the foreign teams to join this Pre-SEA Games tournament would be Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Laos.
“Our main objective is to test our players as well as to prepare all the related SEA Games committees. This will be another opportunity for our players to whet their competence and enable the committees to evaluate their preparedness for the main event in this December,” said Mr. Adsaphangthong.
This tournament will involve more than 80 participants, including players and officials from the participating teams.
“We will follow the standard rules set by the Asian Sepak Takraw Federation. We’ll also broadcast the tournament on the Lao National Television and I hope everyone will cheer up our players,” said Mr Ardsaphangthong.
The Lao sepak takraw team competed at an international event held earlier this month in Vietnam, with the participation of teams from China, Japan, Malaysia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam.
Laos won two bronze medals from the event.
The Lao team also took part in the 24th King’s Cup Sepak Takraw World Championships 2009 in Bangkok, Thailand, in July, which was joined by teams from 21 countries.
Laos won one gold medal, two silver medals and a bronze medal. At last year’s King’s Cup, Laos won three medals - one gold and two bronze.
SEA Games Technical Committee Chairman Phouvanh Vongsouthi said this week’s tournament was important because it would allow all committees involved in the games to assess their preparedness.
If any problems arose they would be able to address them and smooth out any glitches before the games in December.
