Cooperation in healthcare
Vienna, October 15, 2009 (Khabar) - Kazakhstan’s physicians are currently undertaking training in the city of Krems in Austria. This comfortable city with particular atmosphere, which is situated on the left shore of the Danube is famous for its millennial history. In the 12th century, the King of England Richard the Lionheart was incarcerated in the Durnstein fortress. The local Abbey of Melk and other architectural monuments have not less interesting stories. But also the city of Krems is famous for its University of Applied Sciences, which is aimed at teaching specialists in such areas as economy, international law, medicine, tourism and ecology. At this university, the vice-chancellor of the Asfendiyarov National Medical University Valikhan Akhmetov and his colleague from Krems Eva Werner have ratified a memorandum on mutual understanding and cooperation. This memorandum will help to improve Kazakhstan’s healthcare system by means of new technologies and management.
Valikhan Akhmetov, vice-chancellor of Asfendiayarov Medical University:
- Today, we are talking about six main directions of cooperation, which we have been developing for six months. In particular, I am talking about cooperation in healthcare, health economics, risk management in health organizations, and quality of service at hospitals.
The ratified memorandum also includes such areas of cooperation as training of nurses, paramedical personnel and training of medical schools professors for every region of Kazakhstan.
Eva Werner, vice-chancellor of University of Applied Sciences:
- The two universities will link the two countries. The difference in traditions and culture will make our cooperation more interesting, useful and mutually beneficial. We are to teach each other.
Heads of the Healthcare Ministry departments started training in such areas as management in the healthcare system as well as the improvement of the quality of medical service. They are preparing to the reform in the healthcare system and establishment of the single national healthcare system.

- We are satisfied with your students. They are actively participating in our discussions and enrich our university.
Apart from lectures and practical exercises, Kazakhstan’s students visited hospitals of Vienna and Prague.
