Violence reported during blockade against uranium project

Shillong, Oct 15 (PTI) Stray incidents of violence were
reported on the first night of the road blockade called by
Khasi Students Union to protest the proposed uranium mining
project in the northeastern Indian state Meghalaya.

A SUV was burnt near Nartiang in Jaintia Hills district
last night and a government owned vehicle torched in Mawlai
area of the capital city this morning, police said.

Incidents of stone pelting on vehicles and burning of
tyres on roads were also reported from various parts of the
state.

Traffic on the highways was affected during the first
night of the blockade that ended at 5 am on Thursday.

Reports from Ri Bhoi, West Khasi Hills and East Khasi
Hills districts said traffic along the highways thinned after
7 pm last evening when the blockade started. The response was
mixed in Jaintia Hills district.

A few vehicles, especially trucks, plying on NH 40 and 44
were provided police escort, officials said, adding security
personnel were patrolling the highways.

Movement of trucks and night buses to Mizoram and Tripura
from Assam via Meghalaya was severely hit even as prohibitory
orders were imposed in parts of the state to ensure that the
blockade did not affect normal life. (MORE) PTI RTJ
