Fire brigade receives 260 calls on Diwali day

New Delhi, Oct 18 (PTI) As Delhiites celebrated the
Diwali with fervour, fire brigade personnel were on their toes
attending to around 260 calls with regard to fire-related
incidents from across the city.

The officials said though they got 260 complaints about
fire incidents, no major blaze was reported from the city
yesterday on Diwali.

The fire brigade got calls from almost all parts of the
national capital.

"We received 260 calls from yesterday evening to late
night. There is no major incident in any part of the city,"
an official said.

In an incident at a residential complex on Kasturba
Gandhi Marg in Connaught Place, a car and a scooter were
damaged when they caught fire in the afternoon.

"Some children were bursting crackers at MS Apartments
and accidentally, the vehicles caught fire," officials said.

A fire also broke out in a godown of jeans in Gayabasti
area of the national capital last evening.

The fire was doused by the residents. No call was made
to police or fire brigade.

Last year, the fire brigade received over 270 calls
while in 2007 the figure was around 150 calls.

To meet any eventualities during the festival of lights,
the fire department had set up temporary stations and
deployed over 100 water tenders and high-capacity dousers. PTI
