"As India is an important and growing trading partner in
Asean with a bilateral trade amounting to 10.5 billion dollars
in 2008 alone, we are confident that we will continue to enjoy
a smooth trade flow between our countries and witness a
significant increase as the Indian economy opens up to free
trade," Mustapha said.
"Indian producers can now enhance their competitiveness
by sourcing materials/input from Malaysia at lower tariff," he
said.
He said negotiations were on in the areas of investment
and services.
"Successful conclusion of these talks will mean that both
Indian and Malaysian investors as well as services providers
will be able to enjoy preferential access in each other's
markets," he noted.
India-Malaysia bilateral trade crossed the 10-billion-
dollar mark in 2008. Exports from Malaysia to India during
2008 were 7.42 billion dollars. Exports from India to Malaysia
during 2008 were 3.10 billion dollars.
India is the largest trading partner for Malaysia in
South Asia and 12th largest among Malaysia's foreign partners.
Malaysia is India's second most important trading partner
among the Asean countries.
India-Asean bilateral trade crossed the 39-billion-dollar
mark during 2007-08. PTI
