Japan's new govt seeks new strategic partnership with Russia - FM.

TOKYO, October 29 (Itar-Tass) - Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexei Borodavkin believes that Japan's new government led by Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama seeks to bring the two countries' partnership to a qualitatively new strategic level.

"The consultations in Tokyo cannot be described as commonplace, as
they took place soon after the elections that brought to power the
Democratic Party and the new Cabinet led by Prime Minister Yukio
Hatoyama," Borodavkin said after consultations with his Japanese
counterparts in Tokyo. "We welcome as positive the prime minister's
statement that Japan perceives Russia as partner with which it is ready to
jointly work to resolve problems of the Asia-Pacific Region stepping up
cooperation both on the bilateral and international agenda."
"The current consultations confirmed that we have opportunities for
translating these statements into reality," he said. "Both Japan and
Russia seek to bring our cooperation and partnership to a qualitatively
new strategic level."
Borodavkin reiterated that in September President Dmitry Medvedev and
Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama held their first meeting in New York. "It
was a successful meeting. As we see the two countries' leaders established
good and trust-based relations."
He noted that in November Medvedev and Hatoyama would meet in
Singapore within the framework of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation
(APEC) summit.
"There will be contacts at other levels as well, here (Tokyo) and in
Moscow," Borodavkin said.
"The upcoming meeting of the intergovernmental commission due in
Moscow before the end of the year should promote our trade, economic,
scientific and technical cooperation. This is one of the most important
tasks taking into account negative effects of the global financial and
economic crisis both for Russian and Japanese economies," he said.
"It's clear that our relations still have areas, where cooperation
develops not so dynamically," Borodavkin said. "However, these obstacles
are linked with the growth and not with the standstill in cooperation. Our
joint efforts will help to overcome them and all issues will be resolved
as far as our cooperation strengthens and deepens."
