Deployment of Russian base in Kyrgyzstan in stage of negotiations.
BISHKEK, November 2 (Itar-Tass) - The problem of deployment of a
Russian military base in the south of Kyrgyzstan is in the stage of
negotiations, Russian ambassador to Kyrgyzstan Valentin Vlasov declared in
Bishkek on Monday.
For the time being the problem has been discussed at the level of
expert groups who have forwarded corresponding documents to the presidents
of the two countries to study, Vlasov said. If the two presidents accept
the agreement in this variant further steps will be taken then, Vlasov
said.
The plans to open one more Russian military base in Kyrgyzstan were
voiced at a summit the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO)
countries held in the city of Cholpon-Ata in summer. The problem was
raised at a bilateral meeting of Russian President Dmitry Medvededv and
Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev. All the procedural issues connected
with the deployment of the military base were to have been settled by
November 1. The Kyrgyz president said the base would be used as a
training center for CSTO servicemen to improve their combat skills.
