Obama to discuss DPRK denuclearization on Seoul visit.
SEOUL, November 18 (Itar-Tass) - US President Barack Obama begins a
visit to Seoul on Wednesday. He intends to meet Lee Myung-bak, President
of the Republic of Korea (RK), to discuss possible ways of
denuclearization of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
Matters concerning the implementation of a US-RK bilateral Free Trade
Agreement, which the sides signed more than two years ago, will also
figure importantly on the agenda. President Obama, who has already visited
Singapore and Japan, is to arrive here by air from China late on Wednesday
night.
Immediately after a one-on-one meeting on Thursday, there will be an
enlarged bilateral summit involving key ministers. The agenda of the talks
includes ways to implement the provisions of the "Joint Vision for the
Alliance of South Korea and the US", adopted at the June meeting between
the two Presidents. However, the most important subject of discussion at
the talks will be the DPRK and the nuclear problem, said a member of the
RK presidential staff, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Barack Obama and Lee Myung-bak will also discuss in detail the South
Korean President's initiative aimed at concluding a big deal with the DPRK
with a view to achieving Pyongyang's one-off nuclear disarmament, not a
stage-by-stage one.
A discussion of ways to implement the Free Trade Agreement with the
USA will be also of importance, at least to Seoul. The Agreement has not
been implemented up to now. The leaders of the two countries are also to
discuss joint efforts to address changes of world climate and
co-development of new renewable sources of energy.
