Medvedev, Lavrov to meet Westerwelle.
MOSCOW, November 20 (Itar-Tass) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will meet on Friday German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle to discuss major international problems and bilateral projects, including the construction of the Nord Stream gas pipeline.
Both Russia and Germany have an objective interest in further
development of strategic partnership, which acts as a positive factor in
European politics and global affairs, the Kremlin press service said.
Most important bilateral projects will be discussed, including the
construction of the Nord Stream gas pipeline, it added.
Afghanistan will be high on the agenda, as Westerwelle arrives from
Kabul where he and Lavrov attended the inauguration ceremony of President
Hamid Karzai.
Medvedev's initiative to conclude a European security treaty will be
also discussed, as well as the Iranian nuclear problem and Russia-NATO
relations.
Russian foreign ministry spokesman Andrei Nesterenko said the two
countries shall work in "partnership for modernization format" and their
relations are based on equality, respect and mutual interests.
He said Medvedev's speech at the 20th anniversary of the fall of the
Berlin wall "promotes the development of systemic dialogue with the new
German government" and recalled that Russia played a major role in German
re-unification and removal of the "iron curtain".
"The Russian side is interested in continued joint work with Germany
in promoting G20 proposals to reform the international financial system,
coordinate steps to overcome the consequences of the global economic
crisis," Nesterenko said, adding Russia wants to "maintain positive
dynamic in large-scale Russian-German foreign economic ties and investment
cooperation."
The economic crisis halved bilateral turnover from record high 68.2
billion dollars in 2008, but "Germany retained the status of a major
Russian trade partner and now occupies the second place after China," he
said.
.Putin to attend meeting of CIS prime ministers.
YALTA, November 20 (Itar-Tass) -- Russian Prime Minister Vladimir
Putin will participate in a meeting of CIS heads of government in the
Crimean spa of Yalta on Friday.
"The meeting will discuss measures to overcome the global financial
and economic crisis and the draft budget of CIS bodies for 2010,"
government deputy chief-of-staff Yuri Ushakov said.
The meeting will produce an action plan to overcome the crisis and
innovation cooperation guidelines.
On the sidelines of the meeting Putin will have talks with his new
Kirgiz and Moldovan counterparts - Daniyar Usenov and Vlad Filat. A
bilateral meeting with Kazakh Prime Minister Karim Masimov is also
scheduled.
.Russian cruise ship breaks free from ice trap.
VLADIVOSTOK, November 20 (Itar-Tass) -- A Russian icebreaker with over
a hundred passengers onboard succeeded to break free from an ice trap in
Antarctica and is heading for the port of Ushuaia in Argentina.
It will take The Captain Khlebnikov three days to sail 780 miles to
the port, spokeswoman of the Fareastern Shipping Company Tatyana Kulikova
told Tass on Friday.
The icebreaker brought tourists and scientists to see emperor penguins
in Antarctica, but got trapped in pack ice near Snow Hill Island in the
Weddell Sea. The vessel was scheduled to return to Ushuaia five days ago,
but had to struggle for four days through several miles of pack ice to
clear water.
The people onboard weren't in any danger and used the unplanned delay
for helicopter tours of the area.
A half of the tourists are British, including a BBC team shooting the
Frozen Planet documentary.
.Thousands starfish washed ashore in Sea of Okhotsk.
YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, November 20 (Itar-Tass) -- The Sea of Okhotsk has
washed ashore numerous starfish that covered five kilometers of the
southeastern coast of Sakhalin and experts estimate their number at
hundreds of thousands.
Dmitry Galanin from the Sakhalin Oceanography and Fish Research
Institute said starfish migrate at the time to feed on sea scallops that
breed in shallow waters. A storm can wash starfish ashore, he said.
Galanin said dead starfish pose no threat to the environment and may
even be used as fertilizer by farmers.
