Lavrov to attend presentation of Kamchatka econ potential.

MOSCOW, November 24 (Itar-Tass) - The economic potential of the
Kamchatka Territory (KT) is to be presented here on Tuesday, with Russian
Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov attending.
The Foreign Ministry of the Russian Federation (RF) traditionally
devotes much attention to the stimulation and strengthening of the
international contacts of the constituent entities of the RF. "This is one
of major areas of our activities," remarked Grigory Karasin, State
Secretary and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The KT delegation, led by Governor Alexei Kuzmitsky, is to present
investment projects as well as Kamchatka's travel resources.
Kuzmitsky said the KT government investment projects, including the construction of an international
airport, new health-building centers, non-ferrous metallurgy enterprises,
and large fish-processing complexes".
The KT Governor recalled that Kamchatka is a young constituent entity
of the RF. "However, the rich resource potential of the Territory forms
favourable conditions for its development. We intend to look for promising
areas of cooperation". This applies primarily to the fishing industry,
which constitutes the backbone of the Territory's economy. Kamchatka
accounts for 23 percent of the catch of marine bioresources, and turns out
16 percent of Russia's fish products.
It is not in vain that the KT leadership hopes for the development of
the travel sector. Expert opinion is that the nature of Kamchatka is
unique to such an extent that it can fascinate anyone, even most
experienced travelers.
The Peninsula is within a zone of volcanic activity. There are about
300big and medium-sized volcanoes, with 29 of them being active ones.
Eurasia's highest volcano, the Klyuchevskaya Sopka, is located there.
Thermal and mineral water springs, volcanoes, glaciers, the famous
Valley of Geysers, and diverse flora and fauna, mostly unaffected by
civilization, create great opportunities for the development of a broad
spectrum of ecological tourism, sport fishing and hunting, downhill
skiing, and mountain climbing.
