SEVEN MORE GREENPEACE ACTIVISTS TO BE DEPORTED
Pekanbaru, Riau, Nov 26 (ANTARA) - Riau's immigration office was reported intending to deport via Jakarta on Thursday seven foreign Greenpeace activists who had been campaigning in the region.
The seven are part of 12 foreign Greenpeace members who had recently staged an anti-forest cutting action in a rainforest area. The other five were not deported but prohibited from entering Riau territory, head of the local Immigration Office, Lubis Jumanter, said here Thursday.
The Greenpeace activists hail from Switzerland, Australia, Canada, India, America, Belgium, Germany and the Philippines.
"We treat these activists differently in accordance with the degree of their wrong-doing," Jumanter said.
The 12 foreign Greenpeace activists were involved in the blockade at the port of PT. Indah Kiat Pulp And Paper (IKPP), last Wednesday, he said, adding that they had been referred to the Pekanbaru immigration office by the Riau police.
"Until this afternoon, we have received nine foreign Greenpeace activists from the Riau police. The other three are on their way here," Jumanter said.
According to him, the Greenpeace activists did not get the same punishment for the actions they committed at the IKPP Port in Perawang, Siak district. Seven were deported while the rest were just ordered to leave Riau.
"The activists who were only ordered to leave Riau had not taken part in the action in which Greenpece personnel tied themselves to log-moving equipment at the Indah Kiat port, so their offense was lighter. Therefore, we have just asked them to leave Riau and we will escort them to Jakarta. After that, their activities in Indonesia will continue to be monitored," Jumanter said.
It was reported earlier the Greenpeace activists were charged with violating article 335 of the Criminal Code on unpleasant behavior carrying a penalty of two years in prison, and Article 551 of the Criminal Code providing for a penalty of 1 year in prison, according to Riau police.***5***
