OANA meeting, a giant leap forward

TEHRAN, Nov. 28 (MNA) - The 31st Executive Board Meeting (EBM) and 25th Editorial-Technical Experts Group (ETEG) Meeting of the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA), which was held in Tehran on recently, is a giant leap forward for the 40 participants from 18 news agencies as they envisioned future technical policies for free flow of news based on facts without any kind of censorship, distortion or disinformation.

The theme of the conference “A Quest for Global Media Balancing” explains the profound void that exists between the Western media, its daily one-sided news bombardment, and the reaction of Asia-Pacific nations to this cultural invasion.

The population of OANA member states is more than two-third of the world population but its news coverage is still weak and poor.

Lack of professional journalists, who have not been trained for the job and who do not offer up-to-date news coverage, are some of the major problems these news agencies face today.

Despite the fact that the sources of news items these news agencies issue are local journalists and local news agencies but the Western media cover the same news stories in much better and more professional way.

Although there are exceptions but as envisaged in Tehran conference the organization’s member states can apply modern technology to improve their level of media coverage at least when they cover the events taking place in their own countries.

In his speech the managing director of the Mehr News Agency (MNA) and Tehran Times Parviz Esmaeili highlighted various aspects of digital communication era for the next 20 years -- which pave the way for a world free from overflow of unbalanced news dissemination to a great extent.

Regarding the opportunities provided by the digital communication era, the time is ripe to develop policies to facilitate the member states’ access to information networks and communication equipment, to provide a “balanced market of dissemination of information” in order to increase competition and improve the quality of news production.

Let’s take immediate steps and establish technical-legal expert working groups in a bid to increase respect for private and public rights, and find solutions to the major security and legal weaknesses of internet networks, and devise legal, practical, and collective strategies to improve mass-communication morality and professional conscientiousness.

It’s time for drafting a comprehensive, obligatory laws in order to protect the intellectual property rights of news items, articles, and increase the reliability of news sources of OANA members by challenging obscure underground sources.

The practical applications outlined by the relevant officials at the Tehran conference will bring about a world that does not have to rely on imperialistic global news complex.

In an effort to put an end to the Western media’s hegemony, let’s take a leap forward together.
