MODERATE QUAKE HITS MALUKU

Bandarlampung, Indonesia, Nov 29 (ANTARA) - An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale hit the eastern Indonesian province of Maluku before dawn on Sunday.

The epicenter of the quake which struck at 03.40 a.m. was in the sea 118 km northeast of Ambon, the capital of Maluku province, at a depth of 26 km, the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said in its official website.

The quake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami, the agency said.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.

Maluku province lies at the meeting point of the country's two main chains of volcanoes.***
