Police solve bank tunneling case

Astana, December 01, 2009, Khabar – Astana Police have solved an unusual case as they reported that a suspect has been detained for attempting to undermine a bank. It took the unemployed Astana resident 15 months to dig a 74 metre tunnel which was 90 centimetres in height and 70 centimetres in width under the bank. The floor of the tunnel to the bank’s vaults was covered with metal sheets for pushing a wheelbarrow. The suspect started digging from his garage and transported the soil in his car.

Kuanyshbek Zhumanov, Press service chief, Ministry for Interior Affairs of RK:
- During a period of 15 months, the suspect carried over 118 cubic metres of soil which is around 200 tonnes of soil or around 4 thousand sacks. Currently, an investigation is underway with possible accomplices being searched for.

The Police are now also investigating the mugging of two owners of expensive vehicles in Almaty. The hijackers were searching for a victim through newspaper advertisements. The hijacked cars were reported to be in Kyrgyzstan with one of them having been found in Bishkek.
While at the briefing, the Ministry for Interior Affairs also reported that they have formed a special task force to monitor the status of fighting against organised crimes and the prevention of criminal offences committed by under age people.

- The task force includes representatives of the Interior Affairs Ministry, non-governmental organisations, public associations, education, culture and sports bodies as well as the mass media. The Interior Affairs Minister also asked for a sports sections for the under age to be created in Taraz as part of the Dynamo sport complex.
