MEDICAL CENTRE INTRODUCES FIRST CANCER TREATMENT SYSTEM IN M`SIA

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 1 (Bernama) -- The Prince Court Medical Centre (PCMC)
today introduced the 'Tomotherapy Hi Art', the first cancer treatment system in
Malaysia, aimed at improving the quality of healthcare for cancer patients.

Tomotherapy provides a comprehensive service delivery programme that
facilitates the prevention, early diagnosis, treatment, sedative care and
rehabilitation of cancer patients.

PCMC medical director Prof Dr Cyril D. Toma described the Tomotherapy Hi Art
treatment system as a CT scanner-based device with integrated image guidance
and helical radiation therapy-increased accuracy, and enhanced tumour targetting
to increase dosage to tumours while minimising toxicity to patients.

He said, PCMC's acquisition of the RM20 million Tomotherapy Hi Art treatment
system in Malaysia, made it a member in a global network of more than 250 Hi Art
systems in use around the world.

Speaking to reporters here, Dr Cyril said the full Tomotherapy treatment
normally took 15 to 30 minutes, adding that the cost of using the treatment was
between RM25,000 and RM35,000.

"Some of the types of cancer which Tomotheraphy treats are lung cancer,
oesophagal cancer, rectal cancer, brain cancer, head and neck tumours and breast
cancer," he said. (US$1=RM3.38)
