IMF delegation to visit S. Korea to assess economic conditions
SEOUL, Dec. 1 (Yonhap) -- A delegation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF)
will visit South Korea this week to assess its economic conditions and exchange
opinions with policymakers, the finance ministry said Tuesday.
The three-member team to be led by Subir Lall, the IMF's division director in
charge of Korea, will make the visit from Wednesday for a one-week stay, the
Ministry of Strategy and Finance said in a statement.
They will meet with government officials in the financial sector and business
leaders of Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motor and other major companies, the
ministry said. A press conference is also to be held next Tuesday just before
they leave, it added.
The visit is customary as the IMF usually sends staff to Korea twice a year in
June and December. The December visit is drawing increased interest, however, as
the IMF could join other global bodies in raising its growth outlook for South
Korea.
In October, the Washington-based organization predicted that South Korea's
economy will shrink 1 percent this year before expanding 3.6 percent next year.
