MALAYSIA PROMOTES MEDIA CONTENT PRODUCTS TO INTERNATIONAL MARKET

By Zakaria Abdul Wahab

SINGAPORE, Dec 2 (Bernama) -- Malaysia participated in a big way at the 10th
Asia Television Forum (ATF) which began here Wednesday to aggressively promote
the country's locally-made media content products to the international market.

The three-day forum, an anchor event of the annual Asia Media Festival (AMF)
hosted by Singapore's Media Development Authority (MDA) saw about 50 well-known
Malaysian media players including television station operators, film producers
and distributors taking part.

Leading the Malaysian delegation to the festival themed 'Rise with Asia',
are the National Film Development Corporation (Finas), Multimedia Development
Corporation (MDeC) and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission
(MCMC).

The media agencies erected the biggest pavilion at the festival to
accommodate over two dozens local television drama and film producers such as
KRU Studios, Pesona Pictures and Les' Copaque Production to market their
products.

Also participating in the festival are a Malaysian government-owned public
broadcaster RTM, private broadcasting stations namely ASTRO, Primeworks Studios,
8TV, NTV, TV3, LI TV Asia and TM Net.

The AMF and ATF, an important platform for the global media industry to
explore business opportunities, and participated by close to 750 companies from
53 countries, were officially opened by Singapore's Information, Communications
and the Arts Acting Minister Lui Tuck Yew.

In his speech, Lui said that despite the global economic slowdown, Asia's
media industry was in for an exciting phase as there was a continuous growth in
media consumption within the region.

Quoting the Cable and Satellite Broadcasting Association of Asia, he said
subscriptions for television services in the Asia-Pacific region currently
stood at 326 million homes, an increase of 35 million homes from 2008.

Lui also said that given the relatively stronger economies in Asia, Western
producers knew they had to pay even more attention to Asia in search of
opportunities, fresh ideas, capital and markets.

"With a noticeable increase in collaborations in the areas of film and
television co-productions, the importance of Asia as a market and its influence
on global media productions is stronger than ever before," he said.

Last year, the ATF saw a total of US$74 million worth of deals secured.
