AMANJAYA ECO INTERNATIONAL ATTRACTS WORLD REKNOWN PARTICIPANTS

GERIK (Malaysia), Dec 3 (Bernama) -- Some of the world's renown participants started their adventure in the northern state of Perak Amanjaya International Eco Adventure challenge which started here Wednesday.

The 34 participants from 15 countries, including two from Malaysia, set out
on the first day of their five-day adventure which requires participants to
compete in cycling, canoeing, trekking, caving and swimming.

Wednesday's segment involves a 26km distance coverage in Pulau Banding
and the Royal Belum forest here.

Perak Chief Minister Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said the challenge was being
hosted outside the United States and Europe for the first time.

"In fact, ESPN were surprised to see the beauty of our environment and
natural habitat when we first sent out video during the bidding process.

"This is a major achievement for Perak and the country because some of the
best participants are also competing here," said Zambry at the flagging off
ceremony held at the Belum Rainforest Resort here today.

Apart from Malaysia as host, Australia, Sweden, United States, Taiwan,
Japan, United Kingdom, Italy, New Zealand, France, South Africa, Canada,
Singapore, Finland and Mongolia are participating in the race that is regarded
as the biggest in the Asia Pacific.

"Organising such events will certainly give the state a boost, especially
tourism.

The five-day competition requires each two-member team to cover a total of
212km within an anticipated time of 28 hours in five main adventure disciplines
- cycling, canoeing, trekking, caving and swimming.
